RIFAMPICIN

*Tuberculosis, in combination with other drugs (intermittent supervised 6-month treatment):* Adult: 600-900 mg 3 times a week for 6 months (initial and continuation phases) Children: 15 mg/kg 3 times a week (max. per dose 900 mg) for 6 months (initial and continuation phases). *Tuberculosis, in combination with other drugs (standard unsupervised 6-month treatment):* Adult (body-weight up to 50 kg): 450 mg once daily for 6 months; (body-weight 50 kg and above): 600 mg once daily for 6 months (initial and continuation phases). Children: 15 mg/kg once daily for6 months (initial and continuation phases); max. 450 mg per day for less than 50 kg body weight, for above 50 kg body weight max 600 per day. *Prevention of tuberculosis in susceptible close contacts or those who have become tuberculin positive (with or without isoniazid):* Adult & Children above 12 yrs: (body-weight up to 50 kg): 450 mg daily for 3 months; (body-weight 50 kg and above): 600 mg daily for3 months with isoniazid or for 6 months without isoniazid Children 1 month-11 yrs (body-weight up to 50 kg): 15 mg/kg daily, max. 450 mg per day for 3 months with isoniazid or for 6 months without isoniazid; (body-weight 50 kg and above): 15 mg/kg daily, max. 600 mg per day for 3 months with isoniazid or for 6 months without isoniazid. *Prevention of secondary case of Haemophilus influenza type b disease:* Adult & Children above 12 yrs: 600 mg once daily for 4 days. Children 1-2 months: 10 mg/kg once daily for 4 days; 3 months-11 yrs: 20 mg/kg once daily (max. per dose 600 mg) for 4 days. *Prevention of secondary case of meningococcal meningitis:* Adult & Children above 12 yrs: 600 mg every 12 hours for 2 days. Children 1-11 months: 5 mg/kg every 12 hours for 2 days; 1-11 yrs: 10 mg/kg every 12 hours (max. per dose 600 mg), for 2 days. *Brucellosis, Legionnaires disease andserious staphylococcal infections, incombination with other antibacterials:* Adult: 0.6-1.2 g daily in 2-4 divided doses Children 1-11 months: 5-10 mg/kg twice daily; 1-17 years: 10 mg/kg twice daily (max. per dose600 mg). *Endocarditis in combination with other drugs:* Adult: 0.6-1.2 g daily in 2-4 divided doses.

Previous hypersensitivity to any rifamycin, Acute porphyrias, jaundice

Caution patients against intentional or accidental interruption of daily dosage regimen for renal hypersensitivity reactions when therapy is resumed. Urine, faeces, saliva, sputum, sweat and tears may be coloured red-orange.

Acute renal failure, adrenal insufficiency, alterations of liver function, anorexia, antibiotic-associated colitis, body secretions coloured orange-red, collapse and shock, diarrhoea, disseminated intravascular coagulation, Drowsiness, eosinophilia, exfoliative dermatitis, flushing, GI symptoms, haemolytic anaemia, headache, influenza-like symptoms (with chills, fever, dizziness, bone pain), jaundice, leucopenia, menstrual disturbances, muscular weakness, myopathy, nausea, oedema, pemphigoid reactions, psychoses, rashes, respiratory symptoms, shortness of breath, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, thrombocytopenic purpura, toxic epidermal necrolysis, urticaria, vomiting
