📋 Indications & Clinical Dosage

*Schizophrenia and other psychoses, Short-term adjunctive management of psychomotor agitation, excitement, and violent or dangerously impulsive behavior:* Adult & Children above 12 yrs: Initially 5 mg twice daily, increased by 5mg daily after 1 week, then at intervals of 3 days, according to response. Elderly: Initially up to 2.5 mg twice daily, increased by5 mg daily after 1 week, then at intervals of 3 days, according to response. *Short-term adjunctive management of severe anxiety:* Adult: 2-4 mg daily in divided doses, increased if necessary to 6 mg daily. Elderly: Up to 2 mg daily in divided doses, increased if necessary to 6 mg daily. Children 3-6 yr: up to 500 mcg twice daily; 6-12 yr: up to 2 mg twice daily; 12-18 yr: 1-2 mg twice daily, increased if necessary to 3 mg twice daily. *Severe nausea and vomiting unresponsive to other antiemetics:* Adult: 2-4 mg daily in divided doses; max. 6 mg per day. Children 3-5 yr: up to 500 mcg twice daily; 6-12 yr: up to 2 mg twice daily; 12-18 yrs: 1-2 mg twice daily, max 3 mg twice daily.

CNS depression, comatose states, phaeochromocytoma, bone marrow depression, hepatic impairment

🔄 Drug Interactions

Ephedrine, barbiturates, CNS depressants, anticholinergics, antacids, oral hypoglycaemias, antihypertensixes, anticonvulsants, drugs that prolong QT interval.

⚠️ Adverse Reactions / Side Effects

Acute dystonic reactions such as facial and skeletal muscle spasms and oculogyric crises, leucopenia, hyperprolactinaemia, acute dyskinesias, akathisia, Parkinsonism, drowsiness, insomnia, agitation, tachycardia, arrhythmias; ECG changes, hypotension, antieholinergic effects (e.g. dry mouth, blurred vision), respiratory depression, rash, photosensitivity, hypoglycaemia, impaired tem-perature regulation, convulsions, male sexual dysfunction, rarely, agranulocytosis, tardive dyskinesia, jaundice, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, pigmentary retinopathy
